The Best Hot Tub Lighting Ideas for Nighttime Vibes
Max PiggottThere’s something magical about slipping into a hot tub under the stars. The warm water, the crisp night air, and the gentle hum of the jets—it’s the perfect recipe for relaxation. But if you really want to take your evening soaks to the next level, lighting is everything.
From ambient mood lights to eye-catching LED features, the right lighting can turn your backyard spa into a serene retreat or a lively entertainment zone. Here are some of the best hot tub lighting ideas to enhance those nighttime vibes.
Built-In LED Spa Lights
Most modern hot tubs come equipped with built-in multi-colour LED lights. These underwater gems can cycle through soothing colours or stay fixed on your favourite hue. Look for models that let you adjust brightness and colour patterns—ideal for setting the mood whether you’re soaking solo or hosting friends.
💡 Tip: Our Chill Tubs and Canadian Spa Hot Tubs include customisable LED lighting zones—perfect for those late-night dips.

Perimeter & Cabinet Lighting
For a subtle yet stunning glow, add LED strips around the base or corners of your spa cabinet. This not only improves visibility around the tub, but it also gives your spa an upscale, resort-like feel. Pair with matching pathway lights for a fully illuminated backyard experience.
Floating Lights & Orbs
Want something playful and easy to switch up? Try floating LED orbs or waterproof light cubes. These battery-powered beauties drift on the surface of the water, casting colourful reflections and bringing a soft, ambient charm to your spa nights.
🌙 Pro tip: Some floating lights come with remote controls and music-syncing features for extra fun.
String Lights & Lanterns
Nothing says “cosy evening” quite like string lights overhead. Whether you hang them along a pergola, fence, or tree branches, they add instant warmth and romance to your hot tub area. Lanterns—solar-powered or candle-lit—are another great option to sprinkle soft, flickering light around your space.
Smart Lighting with App Control
For ultimate convenience, opt for smart lighting systems that can be controlled from your phone. Set timers, adjust brightness, or match your lighting to your playlist. Many of these systems are compatible with Alexa or Google Assistant, making it easier than ever to create your dream soak setting with just a voice command.
Colour Psychology: Choose Your Vibe
Different colours evoke different feelings:
-
🔵 Blue: Calm and relaxing
-
🔴 Red: Warm and passionate
-
🟢 Green: Natural and grounding
-
🟣 Purple: Luxurious and creative
-
⚪ White: Clean and modern
Mix and match depending on your mood—or set your spa to cycle through them for a full-spectrum chill session.

Nighttime hot tubbing is a whole vibe on its own—but with the right lighting, it becomes unforgettable. Whether you're aiming for zen-like serenity or backyard party energy, lighting is your secret weapon to set the scene.

In-spa LEDs vs garden lighting
| Built-in spa LEDs | Garden lighting | |
|---|---|---|
| What it lights | The water, the waterline and the waterfall | The path, steps, planting and seating area |
| Installation | Fitted at the factory and powered by the spa | Solar, low-voltage or mains, depending on the fitting |
| Safety role | Helps you see the seats and footwell | Helps you get to and from the spa safely |
| Best for | Atmosphere while you soak | Getting there and setting the scene |
Most of our acrylic spas include multi-colour LED lighting as standard. If a spa light fails, replacements are in our lighting accessories collection.
Safety near water: IP ratings explained
Every outdoor light carries an IP (ingress protection) rating, written as IP followed by two numbers. The first number is protection against dust and solid objects; the second is protection against water. A higher second number means better protection.
- Choose fittings made and rated for outdoor use, and check the rating suits where you will put them.
- Fittings that might be splashed from the spa need a higher water rating than a light on a wall well away from it.
- Never use indoor lights, fairy lights or extension leads outside near the spa.
- Mains lighting outdoors should be installed by a qualified electrician, on an RCD-protected circuit.
Solar vs low-voltage vs mains
| Type | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Solar | No wiring, easy to move, no running cost | Weaker light and shorter run time in a UK winter, when you need it most |
| Low-voltage | Safer to handle, many fittings available | Needs a transformer and some planning |
| Mains | Bright, reliable, can be switched from the house | Needs an electrician and cable runs |
Layout ideas
- Light the route. Low bollards or step lights from the back door to the spa.
- Light the steps. A light on or beside the spa step helps you get in and out safely. For the other jobs worth doing once the evenings draw in, see our hot tub guide for after the clocks go back.
- Add a backdrop. Uplight a tree, wall or screen behind the spa so the space has depth.
- Keep it low around the spa. Bright lights at eye level cause glare when you are sitting in the water.
- Use warm white for garden lights and let the spa provide the colour.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use candles around the hot tub?
Battery LED candles are a safer choice. Real flames near a vinyl cover, towels and a wet floor are a risk.
Are solar lights bright enough in winter?
Often not. Short days mean less charge. For year-round use, low-voltage or mains lighting is more reliable.
Can I add lights under a gazebo?
Yes, but choose outdoor-rated fittings and have mains wiring done by an electrician. Our Fraser gazebo gives you a frame to fix lighting to.
Does chromotherapy lighting do anything?
Many people simply enjoy the mood it creates. Our article on chromotherapy explains more, without medical claims.
