Summer Hot Tub Myths—Busted!

Max Piggott

Most people picture hot tubs on frosty winter nights. In summer, plenty of owners stop using theirs, often for the wrong reasons.

A spa can be just as enjoyable in warmer weather. Here are the most common summer hot tub myths, and the reality behind each one.

Myth 1: "It's too hot outside for a hot tub"

Reality: your hot tub doesn't have to be hot.

Turn the temperature down to 30–35°C (86–95°F), or lower, for a cooler soak. On a warm day that feels refreshing, like a small pool with jets.

Tip: Use it in the morning or evening, when the sun isn't as strong.

Myth 2: "Hot tubs in summer are just for parties"

Reality: they are great for entertaining, but there is a lot more to them.

In summer, use your hot tub for:

  • morning stretches or a few quiet minutes
  • loosening up after exercise
  • cooling down after time in the sun
  • screen-free family time

It is somewhere to relax every day, not just when friends come round.

Myth 3: "You don't need to maintain it as much in summer"

Reality: summer brings more contaminants: sun cream, sweat, dust and heavier use.

Hot tubs used in summer often need more frequent water testing and filter rinsing. Keep the water balanced and change filters as needed to avoid cloudy water or unpleasant smells.

Tip: Shower before you get in to cut down on residue.

Myth 4: "You'll waste energy running it in summer"

Reality: set up properly, it uses very little.

Turn the thermostat down, use a good thermal cover, and use eco modes or timers. Warm weather also helps the water hold its temperature, so the heater does less work.

A lower temperature means less energy and a more refreshing soak.

Myth 5: "It's best to drain it and shut it down until autumn"

Reality: leaving a spa empty all summer can lead to:

  • dried-out seals and fittings
  • bacteria growing in any water left standing in the pipework
  • missing out on cool, relaxing soaks

If you really won't use it, follow the proper long-term shutdown steps. But it is usually better to keep using it.

Try a cool soak at sunset, or an evening in the spa with your partner.

Final thoughts: hot tubs aren't just for winter

A hot tub is for all year. Summer just gives you different ways to use it: cooling off, loosening up after exercise, or sitting out under the stars with a cold drink.

So don't close the lid until autumn.
Give your spa a go this summer.
