Guide to buying a new hot tub cover
Xavier LabelleBefore you purchase a hot tub cover it is good to check that you are buying a quality product.

The foam core
One of the most important components of a hot tub cover is the foam core. The foam core not only provides the insulation for the cover, but it also helps to give it strength. Insulation in hot tubs is a very important feature of a hot tub it ensure a hot tub remains efficient through its operation. Initial heating of a hot tub requires energy and time thus making it costly. We aim to provide affective insulation on our products so that when you use our spa you get the best, cost effective usage.
The vinyl covering
A good vinyl cover will be able to withstand the stresses put on it by the elements, which include sun, rain, snow and ice, and other factors such as mould and chemicals. You will want to look for a hot tub cover that is made with durable marine grade vinyl and treated to resist the impact of UV rays, mould and mildew, and chlorine, as the bottom portion will be subjected to the sanitisers used in the water.
The heat seal
Other than keeping the water clean and protecting your hot tub, the hot tub cover also needs to have a good heat seal in order to make it energy efficient. When you are looking for a hot tub cover you know you will have a good one if the R-value rating is 12 to 13.
Some other features that you want to keep in mind when shopping online for a hot tub cover are the safety features, warranties, and the repair and return policies.
Safety features
The hot tub cover should also have reinforced tie-down straps and locking hardware with keys. This will help to ensure children do not get into the hot tub when unsupervised.

How to measure for a new cover
A cover that is even a few centimetres out will leave gaps that let heat escape, or will not sit down properly at all. Measure the spa, not the old cover, unless you know the old cover fitted well.
- Measure the length across the top of the spa from one outside edge of the acrylic lip to the other, in centimetres.
- Measure the width the same way, at 90 degrees to the first measurement. Many spas are square, but do not assume it.
- Measure the corner radius. Lay a straight edge along each side so they cross beyond the corner. Measure from where they cross to the point where the shell starts to curve away. That distance is the radius.
- Note the shape if the spa is round, octagonal or has a cut-away corner.
- Measure the skirt if the old cover's skirt was too short or long. The skirt is the flap that hangs down the side.
- Check the strap positions so you know where the clips will need to go on the cabinet.
Our guide on why you should measure your cover correctly explains the radius measurement in more detail. If you have a Canadian Spa hot tub, the quickest way is to search for the model in our replacement covers, where many covers are listed by model.
Types of cover
| Type | What it is | Good for |

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my cover needs replacing?
If it is heavy with water, sagging in the middle, torn, or you can see steam escaping when it is closed, it is time for a new one.
What does R-value mean?
R-value is a measure of how well a material resists heat flow. Higher is better, but the fit, the hinge seal and keeping the foam dry matter just as much.
Can I order a cover for a spa that is not a Canadian Spa?
Yes, if it matches one of our standard sizes. Measure carefully, including the corner radius, and call us on 01293 824094 if you are unsure.
Which colour should I choose?
Most covers come in grey or brown, depending on the model and stock. Pick the one that best suits your cabinet.
How do I look after it?
Clean it with mild soap and water, condition the vinyl, and leave it off after shocking the water. Our cover care guide has the full routine.
