Setting up a plug and play spa

1. Choose the spot. A flat, level, solid base such as paving slabs on a proper sub-base, a concrete pad or a suitably built deck. Filled, the Montreal weighs about 930 kg before anyone gets in.
2. Check the socket. It should be a weatherproof outdoor socket with RCD protection, within reach of the lead. Never use an extension lead. Ask an electrician to check or fit one if you are unsure.
3. Fill through the filter housing with a garden hose, to about 25 mm above the waterline on the shell.
4. Switch on, cover and heat. With a 2 kW heater, allow roughly 1 to 2°C an hour with the cover on.
5. Balance the water once it is circulating: total alkalinity first, then pH, then sanitiser.

Running costs

With 700 litres of water, the Montreal has much less to heat than a six-seat spa. Raising 700 litres by 1°C takes about 0.81 kWh, roughly 21p at the October to December 2026 Ofgem cap rate of 26.32p per kWh. The daily cost depends on how much heat the spa loses, which comes down to the cover, the weather and how often the lid is open.
