The Barrel Sauna

A proper outdoor oval barrel — 2 to 4 adults on twin facing benches, classic Scandinavian silhouette. Dual heating: a 3,000 W traditional electric stove with rock tray for löyly steam, plus 6 carbon FAR infrared heaters (1,260 W, low-EMF) for gentle core-body warmth. Run either alone or together. Thermo Spruce — heat-treated, outdoor-rated, UK rain/frost/UV-ready. Ships flat-packed on a pallet, 360 kg, assembles in a weekend with two able-bodied people. Top of the CSC sauna range — the indoor Tremblant and Chilliwack step down from this.

Thermo Spruce · oval barrel · outdoor-rated construction

One wood, chosen on purpose. Thermo Spruce — thermally-modified spruce, heat-treated to pull out moisture and sugars so it stays dimensionally stable through UK rain, frost and UV cycles. Resistant to warping, checking and biological attack. Not cedar — if you're cross-shopping "cedar barrel sauna" listings, Thermo Spruce is the correct outdoor spec. Tempered safety glass door plus a small glass window. Ships flat-packed on a pallet (~224 × 130 × 48 cm, 360 kg) — this is a real weekend build, not a click-together indoor kit. If you want indoor instead, step down to the Tremblant 2-person or Chilliwack 1-person. Read the reasoning →

Delivery & Install
Kerbside · free mainland UK · 1–2 weeks

— Arrives kerbside on a pallet, free to mainland UK. Pallet roughly 224 × 130 × 48 cm, 360 kg, flat-packed. Honest note on Back Garden Install: most outdoor-barrel customers do go for this — unlike our indoor saunas, the barrel genuinely is a weekend job. Our framing: much more difficult than our indoor saunas that clip together, but less difficult than building your own summer house. Two able-bodied people, a weekend, basic tools. The traditional stove still needs a local electrician for the hardwired feed — the Back Garden Install covers routing but not the electrical first-fix circuit itself. Kerbside is there if you're happy to handle the build; most customers skip straight to install.

§ 01 · Why A Hybrid Outdoor Barrel

Sweat. Recover. Repeat.
Two heat systems, one cabin.

Outdoor saunas at this size — proper barrel builds in Thermo Spruce — sit in the £5,500–£9,000 bracket once you add a stove. The Outdoor Oval Barrel is £3,998.00, and it gets there without cutting the bits that matter. This is the top of the Canadian Spa Co. sauna range: the indoor Tremblant and Chilliwack both step down from here.

The flagship feature is dual heating. On one side sits a 3,000 W traditional Finnish-style electric stove with a rock tray — pour water on the rocks for löyly steam, run it up to typical Finnish-sauna temperatures of 80–90 °C. On the other side, 6 carbon FAR infrared heaters (1,260 W total, low-EMF carbon construction) deliver gentle radiant heat into the body at 45–60 °C — the detox session, not the blast-furnace session. Run either alone for a different experience, or run both together for the fastest heat-up. Digital control panel with independent timers for each system.

The cabinet is Thermo Spruce — thermally-modified spruce, heat-treated to pull out moisture and sugars so it stays dimensionally stable through the UK rain/frost/UV cycle. Resistant to warping, checking and biological attack. Not cedar — we don't sell cedar products, and Thermo Spruce is the correct outdoor spec for year-round UK use. Oval barrel shape: better air circulation, faster heat-up than a rectangular cabin, and twin benches running along both long sides so two to four adults sit facing each other. External 184.3 × 120 × 194.5 cm, ships flat-packed on a 360 kg pallet. Electrical is two feeds: a plug-and-play 13 A outdoor socket for the infrared, plus a separately-installed 13 A hardwired RCD-protected feed for the traditional stove (local electrician). Running cost at 2026 UK rates (27p/kWh) runs roughly 15p per 45-min IR session, 35–40p per traditional session, ~50–60p typical combined once elements cycle down. Included in the box: wooden bucket, wooden ladle, climate meter, hourglass timer, sauna rocks. 12 months all-in, parts and labour. That's the spec.

§ 02 · What's Inside

Every feature earning its place.

A 3,000 W traditional Finnish-style stove with rock tray for löyly. 6 carbon FAR infrared heaters — low-EMF, 1,260 W total — for gentle core-body warmth. Thermo Spruce cabinetry, outdoor-rated for UK weather. Bucket, ladle, climate meter, hourglass and rocks in the box. Digital control panel with independent timers. Run either system alone, or both together for the fastest heat-up. Post-run. Pre-meeting. Sunday reset.

01 · HEATERS
2systems
Hybrid: Traditional Stove + Carbon FAR IR

Two heat sources inside one cabin. The 3,000 W traditional electric stove with its rock tray is the Finnish-sauna session — pour water for löyly steam, run it up to 80–90 °C if you want it that way. The 6 carbon FAR infrared heaters (1,260 W total) deliver gentle radiant heat at 45–60 °C — the detox session. Run one, or run both together for the fastest heat-up. This dual setup is the whole reason the barrel is the top of our sauna range.

02 · EMF
LowEMF
Carbon-Fibre IR · Low-EMF Design

The infrared system uses carbon-fibre FAR heaters rather than ceramic rods — a fundamentally cleaner electromagnetic signature, radiating heat evenly across a wide surface area rather than cooking you in point-source stripes. Low-EMF carbon construction. Six heaters matched to the oval barrel interior so the IR bathes both benches evenly when you're running infrared-only mode. The traditional stove is used differently — it's there for the cabin-temperature, löyly-steam experience when you want it.

03 · CONTROLS
Dualtimer
Digital Panel · Independent Timers

A digital control panel drives both heating systems with independent timers — run the infrared on its own for a 45-minute core-body session, run the traditional stove for a full Finnish-style 80 °C round, or run both simultaneously for the fastest heat-up when guests are due. Standard built-in lighting. Included in the box: wooden bucket, wooden ladle, climate meter (temperature + humidity), 15-minute hourglass sand timer, sauna rocks for the stove tray. No extras to buy before the first session.

04 · CABIN
184cm
Thermo Spruce · Oval Barrel · Outdoor-Rated

Thermo Spruce — thermally-modified spruce, heat-treated to pull out moisture and sugars so the cabin is dimensionally stable through UK rain, frost and UV cycles. Resistant to warping, checking and biological attack. Oval barrel shape for better air circulation and faster heat-up than a rectangular cabin. External 184.3 × 120 × 194.5 cm, 360 kg palletised. Not cedar — we don't build in cedar; Thermo Spruce is the correct outdoor spec. Canadian Spa Co. is Canadian-founded (1977), UK-supported from Redhill, Surrey.

05 · CAPACITY
4adults
Twin Benches · Face Each Other

Honest spec: 2 to 4 adults on twin facing benches. Couple session with room to stretch, or a proper four-up social sauna — the oval runs benches along both long sides rather than a single side-by-side bench like the indoor Tremblant. Both benches sit upright at a level where the body is within the heat zone of both systems. If you only ever sauna solo or as a pair and want an indoor build, step down to the Tremblant 2-person (£2,099) or Chilliwack 1-person (£2,295).

06 · POWER
2feeds
Two Electrical Supplies Required

This is critical to plan for: the barrel needs two separate electrical supplies. First, a standard outdoor 13 A socket for the infrared system — it ships with a UK plug attached, fully plug-and-play, no Part P paperwork. Second, a 13 A hardwired feed for the traditional stove, installed by a local electrician with RCD protection. That hardwired install is a real job — budget for sparks time. Running cost at 27p/kWh: IR only ~15p / 45 min typical; traditional ~35–40p; both together ~50–60p as elements cycle down.

07 · DOOR
Glass
Tempered Glass Door & Window

Full-height tempered safety glass door — the visual cue that turns this into a piece of outdoor wellness equipment rather than a shed. A small glass window sits alongside for extra light and visual connection to the garden. Handle on both sides. House-standard glass spec across the sauna range.

08 · ASSEMBLY
Weekend
Real Build · Most Opt For Install

This is not the click-together 30-minute job our indoor saunas are. The barrel ships flat-packed on a pallet and, in our own words, is "much more difficult than our indoor saunas that clip together, but less difficult than building your own summer house". Budget for two able-bodied people, a weekend, basic tools. The traditional stove also needs an electrician for the hardwired circuit. Most customers opt for the Back Garden Install (+£799) — unlike the indoor Tremblant, we genuinely recommend it here.

§ 03 · The Cabin

One wood,
chosen for the job.

The Outdoor Oval Barrel ships in a single specification: Thermo Spruce cabinetry, oval barrel shape with twin facing benches, tempered safety glass door plus small glass window, 3,000 W traditional electric stove with rock tray, 6 carbon FAR infrared heaters, digital control panel with independent timers, and a starter set of bucket, ladle, climate meter, hourglass and sauna rocks. No colour options, no trim levels. One cabin, built to do the job outdoors.

01

Thermo Spruce — outdoor-rated, weather-stable.

The barrel is built from Thermo Spruce — thermally-modified spruce. The heat treatment pulls out moisture and sugars, leaving timber that stays dimensionally stable through the UK rain/frost/UV cycle. Resistant to warping, checking and biological attack. This is the house-rule outdoor-rated timber — our indoor saunas use Canadian Hemlock (indoor-only), and we actively don't build anything in cedar. If you're cross-shopping "cedar barrel sauna" listings, Thermo Spruce is the correct outdoor spec.

02

Oval barrel, twin benches facing.

The oval shape is the classic Scandinavian outdoor silhouette, and it's chosen for a reason: better air circulation and faster heat-up than a rectangular cabin at the same volume. Benches run along both long sides of the oval, so 2 to 4 adults sit facing each other — this is a social sauna. External 184.3 × 120 × 194.5 cm, 360 kg palletised, ships flat-packed on a pallet approximately 224 × 130 × 48 cm.

03

Hybrid heating — traditional stove + carbon FAR infrared.

Two heat systems, one cabin. A 3,000 W traditional electric stove with a rock tray for löyly steam (up to 80–90 °C if run hard) sits on one side; 6 carbon FAR infrared heaters (1,260 W total, low-EMF carbon construction) deliver gentle radiant heat at 45–60 °C for detox sessions. Independent digital timers — run either system alone, or both together for the fastest heat-up. The traditional side needs an electrician; the infrared side is plug-and-play.

04

Tempered glass door and window.

Full-height tempered safety glass door with a small glass window alongside — the visual cue that turns this into a piece of outdoor wellness equipment, and a useful connection to the garden while you're inside. Handle on both sides. Standard built-in lighting. The whole barrel ships with a wooden bucket, wooden ladle, climate meter, 15-minute hourglass and sauna rocks for the stove tray — no extras to buy before the first session.

— One specification. Thermo Spruce · oval barrel · tempered glass door & window · 3,000 W traditional stove + 6 carbon FAR IR · digital panel with dual timers · bucket, ladle, climate meter, hourglass, rocks all included · 12 months all-in. No trim levels.

§ 04 · The Layout

Two to four adults.
Twin benches, facing.

The Outdoor Oval Barrel is a 184.3 × 120 × 194.5 cm footprint — a proper outdoor barrel, not a squeezed-into-the-garden indoor cabin that happens to be outside. Twin benches run the full length of both long sides of the oval, so 2 to 4 adults sit facing each other with room to stretch. The indoor Tremblant and Chilliwack are the step-down options if you want a smaller, indoor-only build.

  • 01 / 2–4 ADULT CAPACITY
Two To Four Adults · Twin Facing Benches

Rated for 2 to 4 adults on twin facing benches — a couple with room to stretch, or a proper four-up social sauna. The oval interior is the classic Scandinavian social-sauna layout — you're facing the other occupants rather than staring forward like the side-by-side indoor Tremblant. Both benches sit at a level that keeps shoulders inside the heat zone of both systems.

  • 02 / 184.3 × 120 × 194.5 CM
Outdoor Barrel · Level, Well-Drained Base

At 184.3 cm long × 120 cm wide × 194.5 cm tall, the barrel needs a level, solid, well-drained outdoor base — paving slabs, a patio, or decking with proper load-bearing. Back garden, terrace, or a purpose-built garden corner works. Palletised shipping weight is 360 kg, flat-packed on a pallet approximately 224 × 130 × 48 cm. Not a drop-on-grass install — the load needs dispersing onto a proper base.

  • 03 / HYBRID RANGE
    IR 45–60 °C · Traditional 80–90 °C

Two modes, two temperature envelopes. Infrared-only mode runs the 6 carbon FAR heaters up to a typical 45–60 °C — gentle radiant heat into the body for detox and recovery sessions. Traditional-only mode runs the 3,000 W stove up to the Finnish-sauna classic 80–90 °C, with löyly steam from water poured over the rocks. Combined mode fires both — the IR warms your body while the stove brings the cabin up, which is the fastest route to a full session.

— A note on siting & electrical

The barrel is specified for outdoor installation — back garden, terrace, patio, or outbuilding — on a level, solid, well-drained base (paving slabs, a patio, decking with proper load-bearing). Thermo Spruce plus outdoor-spec sealants and the roof construction make it rain, frost and UV-ready for year-round UK use; that's the point. Two electrical feeds required: an outdoor 13 A socket for the plug-and-play infrared system, plus a 13 A hardwired RCD-protected feed for the traditional stove — the hardwired feed is a real install job, budget for a local electrician. Call 01293 824 094 if you'd like us to talk through siting and the electrical plan before you order.

  • Back Garden Install · £799 — base check advice, full on-site assembly, positioning in the garden, and electrical first-fix routing (a local electrician still wires the hardwired stove circuit itself). Most outdoor-barrel customers do opt for this — unlike our indoor saunas, the barrel genuinely is a weekend build. Skip it only if you're happy to give up a weekend and have the two able-bodied people to lift the pieces into position.
  • Chill Therapy Spa — Brown or Great Lakes Grey — the natural contrast-therapy pairing. Both products sit outdoor on a patio, so the hot-cold-hot ritual stays in one place. Sauna drives you up, plunge drops you down.
  • Want it indoors instead? The Tremblant 2-person (£2,099) and Chilliwack 1-person (£2,295) are the indoor alternatives — Canadian Hemlock, click-together assembly, infrared-only. The barrel is the top of the range; the indoor cabins step down.
  • Compare the full CSC sauna range — entry solo cabins through to outdoor hybrid barrels.
§ Optional · Complete The Ritual

Train. Recover. Repeat.

Pair the Outdoor Oval Barrel with a Chill Therapy Spa for proper Scandinavian contrast therapy — the sauna drives you up, the plunge drops you down, both on the same patio. Or step sideways to the indoor Tremblant if you want the sauna ritual indoors. Or compare the full sauna range. All priced and stocked separately.

— All items stocked separately. Mainland UK delivery on the Outdoor Oval Barrel runs 1–2 weeks kerbside; plunges run slightly longer. Back Garden Install adds £799 and 3–4 weeks.

§ 07 · Verified Owner Reviews

What owners
actually say.

Two verified Outdoor Oval Barrel owners so far — Lyn (who paired hers with a Chill Therapy plunge for proper contrast days) and Linda (installed in a tight spot on an outside deck, using it most days as a family meeting place). More populate through the Judge.me widget below as owners post. If you own one and the hybrid system is quietly doing its job — löyly round on Saturday, IR-only wind-down on Sunday — we'd genuinely like to hear how the ritual is landing through a UK winter.

"This Is What Best Practice Looks Like"

I recently purchased a hybrid sauna and chill therapy spa from Canadian Spa Company and the entire experience has been outstanding from start to finish.

From the initial enquiry through to delivery and installation, the communication was clear, responsive and genuinely helpful. The advice provided gave me complete confidence in my choices, which isn't always the case with higher-value purchases.

The installation team were excellent, professional, efficient and incredibly tidy. They took real care with the set-up and left everything spotless, which made a big difference.

This is what best practice looks like. A high-quality product backed by a team that clearly knows what they're doing and takes pride in their work. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

§ 08 · Before You Buy

Questions worth asking.

How hot does it actually get?

Two different answers, depending on which system you're running. Traditional stove mode (the 3,000 W electric stove with rocks) takes the cabin up to 80–90 °C — classic Finnish-sauna territory, pour water on the rocks for löyly steam. Infrared-only mode (the 6 carbon FAR heaters at 1,260 W) runs at a typical 45–60 °C — gentle radiant heat into the body, the detox session rather than the blast-furnace session. Combined mode is the fastest route to full heat: the IR warms your body while the stove brings the cabin up.

Independent digital timers let you configure all three. Most owners run one system per session — load-up traditional on a Saturday evening, IR-only on a weekday wind-down — and use combined mode when guests are due and you want the barrel warm fast.

Why a hybrid — traditional stove AND infrared?

Because they're genuinely different sessions. The traditional stove gives you the full Finnish sauna — hot air, löyly steam off the rocks, cabin temperatures that make you sweat through the skin. It's the session you share with people. The infrared is a different physiological event — radiant heat driven into the body at lower cabin temperatures, easier on the lungs, more forgiving for longer sessions. It's the detox/recovery session you do on your own.

Most customers thought they wanted one or the other until they used both. The hybrid setup is the whole reason this barrel is the top of the CSC sauna range: our indoor Tremblant and Chilliwack are infrared-only, and they sit below this one.

How many people does it fit?

Rated for 2 to 4 adults on twin benches that run along both long sides of the oval — a couple with room to stretch, or a proper four-up social session. The oval layout means occupants face each other rather than staring forward like the indoor Tremblant's side-by-side bench, which makes this a genuinely social sauna. If you only ever sauna solo or as a pair and want an indoor build instead, step down to the Tremblant (2-person, £2,099) or Chilliwack (1-person, £2,295).

Is it complicated to assemble?

Honest answer: yes, this one is a real build. It is much more difficult than our indoor saunas that clip together, but less difficult than building your own summer house. The barrel ships flat-packed on a pallet and you'll want two able-bodied people, a weekend, and basic tools. Not a 30-minute click-together job. Plan your base, clear the pallet to the garden, and give yourself the full weekend.

The traditional stove also needs a local electrician to install the hardwired 13 A RCD-protected feed — that's not a DIY job. The infrared system is plug-and-play on a standard outdoor 13 A socket. Because the build is a real one, most outdoor-barrel customers opt for our Back Garden Install add-on (+£799): we handle base check advice, full on-site assembly, positioning, and electrical first-fix routing. The electrician still needs to wire the stove circuit, but everything else is done for you. Unlike the indoor Tremblant — where we tell you to skip White Glove — here we genuinely recommend the Back Garden Install for most customers.

Do I need an electrician?

For the infrared system, no — it's plug-and-play on a standard outdoor-rated 13 A socket. UK plug attached, no Part P paperwork. For the traditional stove, yes — the 3,000 W element runs on a 13 A hardwired feed, RCD-protected, installed by a local electrician. That's a real install job; budget for the sparks time.

So: plan for two electrical supplies. An outdoor 13 A socket for the IR (plug in and go), plus a hardwired 13 A circuit for the stove (Part P-certified electrician). Running cost at 2026 UK rates (27p/kWh): IR only lands around 15p per 45-min session typical, 26p flat-out; traditional runs 35–40p typical, 61p flat-out; both together around 50–60p typical, 86p flat-out as elements cycle down at temperature.

Where can I install it?

The barrel is specified for outdoor installation — back garden, terrace, patio, or an outbuilding. UK year-round use is the whole point: Thermo Spruce plus outdoor-spec sealants and roof construction make it rain, frost and UV-ready. Not a summer-only product.

You need a level, solid, well-drained base — paving slabs, a patio, or decking with proper load-bearing. Not drop-on-grass: the 360 kg palletised weight needs dispersing onto a proper base. Within cable reach of both your outdoor 13 A socket (for the IR) and the hardwired feed your electrician will install for the stove. How is it delivered?

Free kerbside delivery to mainland UK, 1–2 weeks from order. The barrel arrives flat-packed on a pallet approximately 224 × 130 × 48 cm, 360 kg total. You'll need to plan for getting the pallet from the kerb to your chosen build spot — most customers use pallet trucks, garden trolleys, or two strong people plus a bit of ingenuity.

Because the build itself is a real weekend job, most outdoor-barrel customers opt for the Back Garden Install add-on (+£799, 3–4 weeks): base check advice, full on-site assembly, positioning in the garden, and electrical first-fix routing. A local electrician still handles the hardwired stove circuit, but the barrel-build itself is done for you.

What's the EMF position on the infrared?

The infrared system uses carbon-fibre FAR heaters — a low-EMF carbon construction that runs a fundamentally cleaner electromagnetic signature than the ceramic-rod heaters that still show up in entry-level saunas. Carbon radiates across a wider surface area, so the heat arrives evenly rather than as point-source stripes.

For most occasional users, EMF exposure in any modern sauna isn't a clinical concern. It matters most if you're a heavy user (daily, 45+ minute sessions) and it's why we specify carbon rather than ceramic rods in this barrel.

What are the wellness benefits?

Regular sauna use — whether infrared or traditional — is associated with the following: removes toxins from the body (detoxification), improves skin look and feel, aids in weight loss, relieves body aches and muscle pain, supports post-workout muscle recovery, helps keep colds at bay (immune support), lowers blood pressure, supports those with arthritis or old sports injuries, and improves sleep quality. All of these are driven by the heat response itself — the barrel delivers the physiological session through both heating modes, without gadget add-ons.

Not medical advice — talk to your GP if pregnant, cardiac conditions, uncontrolled hypertension, Raynaud's, or on medication. Sauna heat is a powerful physiological stimulus and should be treated like one.

What does the warranty cover?

12 months, parts and labour, all in. Covers the 3,000 W traditional electric stove, the 6 carbon FAR infrared heaters, the digital control panel with its independent timers, and the Thermo Spruce cabinetry. No split invoice between parts and labour, no tiered add-ons, no annual-service clause to keep it active. UK support, UK labour, one year.

Out of scope: consumables (sauna rocks, essential oils, cleaning products), damage from incorrect siting (base, drainage), and third-party electrical work on the hardwired stove circuit (which is covered by your electrician's own Part P certification). Back Garden Install (optional paid add-on) is covered by its own workmanship guarantee.

Why not just buy a premium outdoor sauna?

Genuine question, honest answer. The outdoor-barrel category at this size — Thermo Spruce, hybrid heating, twin benches — sits in the £5,500–£9,000 bracket once you add a proper stove. The Outdoor Oval Barrel is £3,998.00, and it gets there without the compromises you'd expect: 3,000 W traditional stove + 6 carbon FAR IR, Thermo Spruce outdoor-rated cabinetry, twin facing benches, bucket-ladle-climate-meter-hourglass-rocks in the box, 12 months all-in, UK support from Redhill.

If you want the sauna indoors instead, step down to the Tremblant or Chilliwack — infrared-only, Canadian Hemlock, click-together assembly. If you want the full contrast-therapy setup, pair the barrel with a Chill Therapy Spa on the same patio.

Can I see one in person before ordering?

Yes. Our showroom is at Canada House, Unit 1, Salbrook Road, Redhill, Surrey · RH1 5GL. Ten minutes from Gatwick. Open Monday–Friday 9am–6pm and weekends 10am–4pm. Please call ahead (01293 824 094) if you'd like the Outdoor Oval Barrel pre-heated and ready for you to step into — both the stove and the infrared need a few minutes to settle.
