The St Lawrence 16 — our XTrainer — carries 19HP of total pump power, and that figure is not a round-up. It's the ceiling of the Balboa control system: the controller caps total output at 19HP, and we've built the XTrainer right to that ceiling. Our 13ft and 20ft swim spas both run at 15HP. The 16ft runs 4HP higher, and that extra power goes straight into the swim end.
The practical result: a current strong enough for proper stroke swimming — breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle — without a tether. An adjustable tether is included for stability or technique work, but most owners never clip in. Air-adjustable flow lets you turn the bubbles out of the water stream when you're focused on stroke and breathing (smooth riptide, not a frothing washing machine), then dial them back in for casual float-and-play.
Two spas in one shell. Morning: pour the full 19HP into the swim end for a serious session. Evening: sit with six adults at the spa end — ergonomic contour seats, a no-float lounger, hurricane hydromassage. One 3 kW Balboa heater holds the shell at setpoint year-round — most customers land around 35 °C, cool enough for a morning swim without overheating, warm enough an hour later to feel like a hot tub.
